Loon Golf: LIV Bad Guys That Could Win The Masters

*DISCLAIMER*

Don’t get it twisted, Loon Golf hates the LIV tour. Hates it.

Here we are, the week before the 2023 Masters and to be honest its already the only thing on my mind. On Monday it will officially be the best golf week of the year (not close) and we’ll get to see Augusta in all her glory. Going into this years tournament, there is something that seriously needs to be addressed.

There are some players who now play for that other tour, and the guys I’m about to mention could legitimately win The Masters.

LIV players not only will be present for the Champions Dinner, they’ll be there for it all. As much as we’d hate to see it, I for one strongly believe that one of them could actually win this thing.

We’re going to name a few that could win and how exactly we think that would play out for the PGA/LIV battle.

Cameron Smith: +2000

You had to see this one coming. Cam Smith is still a GREAT golfer and there is no reason (other than his non-existent schedule) that he couldn’t put on the green jacket next Sunday.

Let’s take a look at Cam’s stats at Augusta the last three years.

T2 in 2020.

T10 in 2021.

T3 in 2022.

The guy is an absolute horse for the course and frankly its frightening. If Cam Smith wins, I imagine he will be pleasant, having minimal hostility with Jay Monahan and the players of the PGA tour. There’s a chance he might throw some shots about winning even though he hasn’t been playing “real golf”, but it wouldn’t be that big of a deal. Of course, I would still be extremely rattled if a LIV golfer were to win, but I have to prepare for this because it’s a real possibility.

Dustin Johnson: +2000

Dustin Johnson is a baaaaad man. We all know there’s a 1,000% chance that DJ shows up at Augusta without a care in the world. He’s prepared to arrive and make it incredibly clear that he does not give a single fuck what you think of him.

In regards to his golf, DJ placed T12 in 2022 very quietly, and won The Masters in 2020 (covid championship, but he still wore that damn green jacket).

If DJ wins we could see some fireworks. Even though DJ would rather be a fisherman than a golfer, he still loves to win, and would gladly throw it back in the PGA Tours face while getting paid millions of Saudi dollars to spank Patrick Reed once a month.

Naturally, when we talk about DJ there’s always an elephant in the room… and that’s his bombshell wife, Paulina.

Let’s just take a moment, step back, and appreciate that this view will be back at Augusta this year! We know those camera men are going to be sneaking her into every shot they can this week.

Before we move on to our last real LIV golf outright candidate, there are a few nightmare scenarios.

Of course, we have to start with that chubby prick, Patrick Reed. If Reed somehow wins, the PGA Tour may as well sell. His wife, @useGolfFACTS, will be all over Twitter, absolutely murdering everyone in sight and I cannot bear to picture Patrick in a green jacket again.

It was frightening enough the first time.

And on the other hand, we have the possibility that the Saudi Prince himself, Phil Mickelson, takes home another green jacket. To be honest, it’s the smallest possibility of all time. Phil can’t go out and shoot 74-76 and expect to play the weekend. So obviously, Phil will likely miss the cut but it still feels impossible to rule out a former champion. He’s another guy that if he were to win The 2023 Masters, it would cause Jay Monahan to go into hiding for the rest of eternity.

Joaquin Niemann: +4500

The last LIV guy that has a realistic chance at putting on the green jacket is Joaquin Niemann. I don’t have a whole lot of reasoning on Niemann, but I have to respect his play right before he left for the JV tour. Even though I was tempted to include the heir to the Saudi throne, Bryson, Niemann is ultimately the third most likely option. When he’s on, he’s very very good and he has shown that he can close out golf tournaments. Remember when he shot back to back 63’s at the Genesis last year? That’s scary good.

Look out for him to possibly shoot up the leaderboard, but I doubt he can get it done for 4 full days.

Don’t worry there is plenty more Masters content to come from The Loon.

We wanted to get this out there and make sure that everyone is preparing for the big week and preparing for all the possibilities available. We may do another blog on what will be said at The Champions dinner, and how I wish Bryson was invited. But that is a story for a different day.
