The Ride of a Lifetime

I just had by far the best week of sports betting in my life and it really wasn’t even close. I was seeing the board so clearly, it was truly remarkable. I’ve been betting on sports religiously for the past 3-4 years, week in and week out. I’m a true degenerate. Most weeks the bookie sends me that Venmo request first thing Monday morning. Fortunately for me and unfortunately for him, tomorrow won’t be one of those Monday’s.

Before I get started, I want to preface by saying that here at Loon State Sports we do not unit shame and therefore I will only refer to any wins/losses in this blog in the form of units.

My hot streak kicked off Monday night when my buddies and I decided it was an awesome idea to cook up a 3 team parlay. I placed a wager for one unit and I think it’s important to emphasize that I hardly ever bet parlays on a normal week. The Minnesota Wild -1.5, Murray State Basketball -17.5 and over 138 in the Texas Tech/Kansas game. With my fingers crossed I sat down on the couch and sweated these meaningless games out. Sure enough, the parlay hit for 5.16 units. When you’re up 5+ units to start the week you get the feeling that you’re playing with house money and it’s really easy to get trigger happy.

Tuesday rolls around and we’re feeling good. Of course I head straight back to the parlay section of the sports book and place 2 lays. The first was the Timberwolves ML, Nashville ML and NDSU hoops -8.5. The second was similar, Timberwolves ML, Nashville ML and Toledo hoops -4.5 (why I placed both, I’m still not sure). Each bet was a one unit play to win 3.88. The first two legs hit fairly easily, but leave it to the Timberwolves to make me sweat at 11 PM on a Tuesday night. Nonetheless, Anthony Edwards went off for 40 points and the wolves were able to pull out the W in a game that came down to the last seconds with Portland. Those two parlays hitting were huge for me, because like I said before, it’s easy to bet with house money. I’m also a big Arizona basketball fan so naturally I threw 3 units down on them in the prime time game against UCLA Tuesday night. With no surprise and how it usually goes when you’re confident in a bet, they were down 11 heading into halftime. The live odds were too enticing to say no, so I doubled down. Fast forward another hour or so and I’m out 6 units on this stupid game. On to Wednesday.

Still rattled from the Arizona/UCLA game on Wednesday morning, I’m sitting at work debating the idea of making any bets for the day. But, when you’re hot you’re hot. We crafted up another parlay, this time a 4 teamer that would pay +870. Calgary ML, Charlotte ML, Providence +8 and Marquette +6. Also on Wednesday morning, I picked 5 guys to win the Farmers Insurance Open (Rahm, List, Finau, Hoge & Zalatoris), we’ll come back to that. The lay was the easiest bet of the week so far, each team covering without a doubt. Up another 8.72 units, I placed one unit bets on the Bruins ML and the Suns ML just to feel a sweat that evening. The Suns won and the Bruins lost and I still was up 8.48 units for the night.

I had the day off Thursday and that really gave me some time to study the board. I woke up around 9:30, grabbed a cup of joe and my laptop and got in the lab. I drew up 8 total bets for the day, including 3 parlays, 3 straight bets and 2 prop bets. I went 4-4 on these plays, but hit 2 out of 3 parlays and finished the night up another 8.44 units. Friday was tame in comparison to the rest of the week. Obviously I was still feeling myself but I only placed two bets, both 1 unit parlay plays. I had a heavy moneyline hockey parlay that hit to salvage the loss on the other greasy lay and I went to bed up an additional 1.44 units.

Saturday was the day where this week went parabolic and it was all because of a tiny wager (not even 0.5 units) that I made on Wednesday in my office. In reality, I went 2-3 on bets that I actually placed Saturday for -0.32 units. However, this is where it got weird. Driving back from a quick afternoon trip to the casino (naturally), my buddy reminds me that Luke List and Will Zalatoris are duking it out for first place at the Farmer’s Insurance Open. I didn’t think much of it until he reiterated that Luke List had the club house lead on the final day of the tournament (I don’t know all the details but I still think it’s ridiculous that CBS would end a golf tournament on Saturday). These two ended up in a playoff, which for me was a win-win situation. If Zalatoris won, I would win 10 units. If Luke List was able to come out victorious, I would win 40 units. I was absolutely locked in on the playoff, which took all of one hole. Luke List STUFFED his approach and tapped in for birdie to seal the deal. BOOOOOOOOOM ANOTHER 40 UNITS. IT WAS ALWAYS LUKE LIST (@jerseyjerry).

Of course I spent Saturday night celebrating accordingly, I was up over 61 units on the week heading into Sunday. How could I not? So, did I quit there?? NOPE. On a hungover Sunday, with the scaries looking me dead in the eyes, I buckled in and placed another 8 bets without any research. The Sunday night game was a bit of a sweat for me, I had a parlay of Bengals +7 and Rams ML. The Rams were down 3 with about 10 minutes left and I live bet them to win again. Matt Stafford and the troops got the ball back and proceeded to march down the field and kick a field goal. With just over a minute on the clock, Jimmy G and the Niners took the field. But Jimmy G did Jimmy G things and threw a game ending pick. Both bets cashed, followed up by a couple late night wins from the Wolves and Wild. I capped off my insane week with an absurd 8-0 day on Sunday, adding 13.05 units more units.

WHAT A WEEK. That was the ride of a lifetime. Imagine winning 74.15 units in one week. Let alone winning that many units while not making a single bet larger than 3 units. I still can’t believe it, what a run. Shout out to all the boys at Loon State Sports for the tips and for tailing some of these greasy parlays with me. Shout out to Luke List, it was always Luke List. With that being said, next week is a new week. Lets keep the flame going and cash a few more.
